LONDON, May 16 (Reuters) A loaded weapon was recovered from a man shot dead by police in west London, investigators said today.

The 52-year-old man, who has not been identified, died after shots were fired by police during an investigation into London's gun crime.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said the loaded weapon, along with the three police firearms, was being forensically examined.

The shooting happened outside Paolo's restaurant, near Park Royal Underground station, in Hanger Green, Ealing, at about 2225 hrs yesterday.

Officers gave first aid to the shot man but he died at the scene.

Armed officers were supporting a team from the Metropolitan Police's Trident unit, which investigates crime within the black community, during a ''pro-active, intelligence-led operation''.

No police officers were injured in the incident and there were no arrests.

IPCC Commissioner Deborah Glass said: ''Our investigators have been at the scene all night.

''The forensic examination of the scene has begun and house-to-house enquiries are under way.'' She said the investigation will look at the planning of the operation, as well as the way it was carried out.
