Plan to construct underpasses in city

Chandigarh, May 16 (UNI) Chandigarh Administration plans to construct underpasses at various places in the city in order to deal with severe traffic congestion on roads.

To start with, the Administration has planned to construct underpasses at four places on the Madhya Marg. Each underpass would be approximately 400 meter long and 7.5 meter wide dual carriageway.

The estimated cost of construction of each underpass including civil, electrical, drainage and landscaping works is Rs 8 crore.

The union territory of Chandigarh spread over an area of 114 Sq km, has a population of 10.78 lakh. With towns of Panchkula and Maholi being contiguous to Chandigarh, the city becomes practically a larger urban area with population of about 11 lakh. There are around 5.64 lakh vehicles operating in the city.

The construction of underpasses will allow uninterrupted movement of traffic at the intersections, thereby increasing the capacity of road carriageway. Each underpass would take about seven to nine months to complete.
