Maoists destroys statues of Kings

Kathmandu, May 16 (UNI) Students of a Maoist wing destroyed at least seven statues of late Kings in different parts of Nepal, demanding to declare the Himalayan nation a republic.

The students of Maoists-affiliated students union and youth wing led by chairman Lekhnath Neupane yesterday destroyed the statue of the late King Mahendra, father of suspended King Gyanendra at Kalimati Chowk here.

A statue of the late King Tribhuvan on university premises in Kirtipur and four statues of the late King Birendra in Pokhara were also destroyed, Kantipur paper reported.

The statues were destroyed as part of the campaign to make Nepal a republic and abolish the monarchy, Kantipur quoted Neupane as saying.

The Maoists have already presented a proposal before Parliament to turn the country into a republic.
