RS adjourned for day; Cable TV Bill passed

New Delhi, May 15 (UNI) Rajya Sabha was today adjourned till tomorrow amid pandemonium over the attack on a media house in Madurai even as the House passed without discussion the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2007.

The Bill had been passed by the Lok Sabha earlier.

The Bill, which was introduced by Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi amid slogan shouting by AIADMK members, was put to vote after Deputy Chairman Rahman Khan said there was a division.

The panel showed 16 members having voted for the Bill and one against it. However, the Deputy Chairman said the figure was actually 69 for the Bill and one against it and the board had shown incorrect result.

BJP member Sushma Swaraj immediately objected and said the results shown could not be accepted and the Bill could not be passed because at least 25 members should vote for it.

The panel showed no abstention.

The Deputy Chairman overruled Ms Swaraj's objection and said he had already announced the correction.

The Bill was finally passed amid pandemopnium and the House adjourned immediately after that.
