No info whether border rubber plantation scheme successful or not

New Delhi, May 15 (UNI) The government today told the Lok Sabha it had no information on whether the rubber plantation project in Tripura had been successful or not in tackling infltration and smuggling along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Minister of State for Home Affairs S Regupathy also said, in a written reply, there was no proposal by his ministry to extend such schemes along the border with any country.

However, the Centre has initiated certain measures to check illegal cross border activities along Indo-Bangladesh border, including round-the-clock surveillance of the border by patrols, foot as well as on horses, camels, boats and vehicles, laying nakas (border ambushes) and by setting up observation posts. Riverine segments of international border are being dominated by deploying Water Craft of Border Security Force (BSF) water wing.

Construction of fencing and floodlights on International Borders, construction of border roads, conduct of special operations and co-ordination with sister agencies are the other measures, Mr Regupathy added.
