Former minister collects chargesheet in corruption case
Chennai, May 15 (UNI) Former AIADMK Minister K A Sengottaiyan, today appeared before a Special Court, trying CBI cases and collected copies of chargesheet in the Rs 2 crore gift case, in which former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is the prime accused.
Principal Special Judge, S Meenakshisundaram, trying CBI cases, before whom Sengottaiyan appeared, served the copies of the chargesheet and posted further hearing of the case to June 11.
The judge also posted to May 18 orders on a petition filed under section 205 of CrPC, by Sengottaiyan, seeking to dispense with his appearance for the proceedings.
Earlier, Advocate N Jyothi, counsel for Ms Jayalalithaa, collected copies of the chargesheet on her behalf, While Alagu Thirunavukkarsu appeared in person before the court and collected copies of chargesheet.
According to CBI, Ms Jayalalithaa, during her tenure as Chief Minister between 1991 and 1996, received 89 Demand Drafts to the tune of Rs 2 crore from 57 persons as gifts on the occasion of her birthday in 1992.
She was charged under section 11 of Prevention of Corruption Act, (public servant barred from receiving valuables from persons with whom he/she had official dealings). Sengottaiyan and Alagu Thirunavukkarasu were charged under section 12 of PCA (Abetting the commission of an offence).
