PMO confirms Maran's resignation from Union Cabinet
New Delhi, May 14: The Prime Minister's Office today confirmed that Communications and Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran had resigned from the Union Cabinet.
The resignation came after the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu yesterday sought the removal of Mr Maran from the Cabinet for violating party discipline and tarnishing its image.
Mr Maran, camping in the hill resort of Ooty, faxed his resignation to the Prime Minister's Office last night.
It is not known whether the Prime Minister has forwarded the resignation to President A P J Abdul Kalam.
The action against Mr Maran, grand nephew of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, came four days after 'Dinakaran', a daily owned by the minister's elder brother Kalanidhi Maran, was attacked in Madurai in which three people were killed.
The attack was carried out by the supporters of M K Azhagiri, elder son of Mr Karunanidhi, over a survey in the daily about Mr Karunanidhi's political heir.
