Govt to hold discussions with college managements: CM

Thiruvananthapuram, May 14 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today said the government would hold discussions with the managements of self-financing professional colleges to find an amicable solution in this regard to end the impasse in the higher education sector.

Talking to newspersons after an all-party meeting, he said the Cabinet sub-committee headed by Education Minister M A Baby would hold discussions with the management to arrive a consensus in this regard.

Mr Achuthanandan said a decision in this regard was taken at an all-party meeting, convened by the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government, to end the impasse in the higher sector education sector following the Supreme Court verdict giving full freedom to their managements in admission and fee structure.

After the meeting with the management, the government would convene another meeting and discuss the reaction of the management in this regard.

If the management's response was negative, the government would seek another alternative, including bringing in another legislation to tide over the crisis.

The Kerala High Court had quashed certain portions of the Kerala Self-Financing Professional Colleges Act 2006, brought in by the LDF Government, aimed at controlling admission and fees of students. The Supreme Court had recently refused to stay the High Court order.

Besides all partners both in the ruling LDF and the Opposition UDF, BJP and NCP also participated in the meeting.
