Farmers thwart port project

Puducherry, May 14 (UNI) Farmers and residents of Thengaithittu village on the outskirts of Puducherry yesterday swung into joint action to level the barren farm land with a view to ensure that there was no acquisition of the site for the deep sea port project the Union Territory Administration had planned.

The project has been planned on a 300 acre site through a private agency.

The farmers told media that they had come together to bring under cultivation the land that belonged to them for joint farming.

They started sowing seeds of vegetables and harticultural crops after levelling the barren land.

The government has an extent of 153 acres in the village. The villagers said they had no right to stake claim or to resist any plan of the government.

The local people in the village are opposing the Rs 2700 crore project and had been puttng up strong resistance.

Chief Minister N Rangasamy had announced that no farm land would be aquired for the project.
