Debt-ridden small farmer commits suicide in Ludhiana
Ludhina, May 14 (UNI) A debt-ridden small farmer hanged himself to death in village Bhoparai Khurd in this district, police today said.
According to police sources 33-year-old Sukhwinder Singh owed Rs 2.5 lakh to an Arhatia (commission agent) and Rs 2.5 lakh to a cooperative bank.
He had gone into depresssion recently after the wheat grown on his land of 2.5 acre and on another 5 acre land taken by him on contract, was damaged due to heavy rain and the commission agent did not pay him any money.
This morning, when Sukhwinder's wife went to his room to serve him tea, she found that the door was bolted from inside and there was no response. When the door was broken, Sukhwinder's body was found hanging from the fan.
He is survived by his wife, a 10-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter.
A case has been entered under CRPC 174, police sources said.
