Mumbai, May 14 (UNI) The conservancy department and the maintainance department in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are at loggerheads as to who will clear the silt removed from the nullas.

Leader of the House, Sunil Prabhu today said if the garbage is not picked up in time then the silt will go into the nullas once again, thereby making the cleaning ineffective.

The Corporators said the conservancy department and the maintainance department were not sure as to who should pick up the garbage.

BMC Commissioner Jairaj Phatak said he will have a word with the Assistant Municipal Commissioners, Deputy Municipal Commissioners and Additional Municipal Commissioners of the city and will decide as to which department will do the job. He assured co-ordination between various authorities.

Another issue the BMC has to tackle is the shortage of labour in the various departments. In all, each ward has 1,500 man days for the labours for the various work done. This means each Councillor in a ward office of 15 corporators, will have only 100 man days in a month, and it is inadequate.

Opposition leader of the BMC Raj Hans Singh said, ''The number of labours is inadequate because the number of corporators is different in every ward and the number of man days is very less for the amount of work that needs to be done in the ward.'' Mangesh Satamkar of the Shiv Sena said that labour should be increased to at least 250 per councillor.

The increase in the number of labours was demanded by the councillors and the Chairman of the Standing committee Ravindra Waikar has decided to increase the number of labour before the monsoon season.
