Swamy welcomes Mayawati's victory

Chennai, May 13 (UNI) Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy today welcomed Ms Mayawati assuming office as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and said this was due to her hard work and grit.

In a statement here, he urged her to ensure there was no vindictiveness or victimisation of outgoing Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav since her electoral mandate in terms of votes polled was only 3.8 per cent more than that of Mr Yadav-led Samajwadi Party.

He said the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) received 30.4 per cent of the vote, while the SP received 27.6 per cent of vote. In fact the SP received one per cent more vote than the last election, he claimed.

Therefore, Mr Yadav might have lost majority in the House but he had not lost favour with the voters. He could easily bounce back,Dr Swamy said.
