Nagpur, May 13 (UNI) BJP All India General Secretary Gopinath Munde has demanded a white paper on the power situation in Maharashtra.

Speaking to newsperson here yesterday, Mr Munde said there were contradictions in the statements by ministers in the Union and the Maharashtra cabinet about the condition of the power sector in the state. The state government must, therefore, issue a white paper on the issue to put things in the right perspective, he said.

The situation was critical and load shedding was not likely to end even in the next five years, said Mr Munde, who held the energy portfolio in the BJP-Shiv Sena government that ruled Maharashtra between 1995 and 1999.

Mr Munde said that his party had committed a blunder by helping Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati become the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (UP) thrice earlier. Her stay in power helped Mayawati create a positive image of herself, and this was what had had cost the BJP dear at the recent Assembly elections there.

Advising the state government to take the initiative in tackling the naxalite menace, Mr Munde, who also held the Home portfolio, said Maharashtra must initiate efforts to uproot the illegal movement with help from other affected states, especially Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Mr Munde reiterated the demand for holding the monsoon session of the Maharashtra Legislature in Nagpur. The winter session of the legislature was an exercise in futility as it had never lasted for more than two weeks and very little business was transacted, he said. The monsoon session would last for at least four weeks since the supplementary demands were taken up during the period, he added.
