Angad, Gurjeet show their class in 10km races

Chandigarh, May 13 (UNI) Havaldar Angad Kumar, representing the Army Sports Institute (ASI) Pune won the gruelling 10 km race for men conducted by the Western Command as a precursor to the Fourth Military World Games 2007 scheduled to be held at Hyderabad later this year.

Hav Dharamvir Singh and Rfn Chand Neni, both of the ASI, got second and third spots, respectively.

Gurjeet Kaur Virk of Sangrur claimed this honour in the women's 10 km race which was flagged off from the Secretariat. Sunita Malik finished runner-up.

Sunil Kumar of Army Sports Institute crossed the finish line first the boys 5 km race.

Paramjit Singh, also of ASI and Lovepreeet Singh of Mission Olympic Wing (MOW), Delhi captured second and third positions.

In the 5 km girls category, MOW girls made a clean sweep by bagging all the top three positions with Jyoti Kumari coming first, Laita Kumari second and Kavita Sangwan third.

The ceremonial 1.5-km run, which was flagged off at the Sukhna Lake by the Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT Chandigarh, Gen (Retd.) S.F. Rodrigues, witnessed overwhelming response as more than 600 runners including a large number of senior citizens and senior retired officers of the Armed Forces enthusiastically took part.
