Women storms CM's residence to demand UPF leader's release

Imphal, May 12 (UNI) About 200 women today tried to rush in towards the highly protected official residence of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh to demand release of Laishram Premjit, General Secretary of United People's Front, Ithai Council.

The women were stopped by the security personnel on duty and additional forces rushed in to stop the agitators.

They demanded that arbitrary arrest and torture of ordinary citizen by troops should be stopped immediately and security forces be asked to respect the law of the land.

The police finally allowed only few women to go inside the Chief Minister's residence to submit a memorandum.

UPF General Secretary O Bikramjit said in the memorandum that L Premjit was nabbed by a combined force of 100 Bn BSF and 7 Assam Rifles on May 7 last without issuing arrest warrant. The Supreme Court had instructed all troops to issue arrest warrant while carrying out any arrest. Premjit was later handed over to police and was still in the custody of the police.
