London, May 12 (Reuters) Following are some of the major events to have occurred on May 13 since 1900: 1927 - ''Black Friday'' hit Germany, signalling the collapse of its economic structure.

1940 - Winston Churchill told parliament after setting up Britain's wartime coalition government that ''I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat''.

1961 - Gary Cooper, who won Oscars for his roles in the films ''Sergeant York'' and ''High Noon'', died at 60.

1965 - Israel and West Germany agreed to establish diplomatic relations. Several Arab nations broke ties with West Germany.

1968 - Talks between North Vietnamese and American negotiators began in Paris aimed at ending the Vietnam War.

1981 - Pope John Paul was shot and wounded as he drove through a crowd of 20,000 in St Peter's Square in Rome. The gunman, Mehmet Ali Agca, was arrested.

1992 - Three astronauts simultaneously walked in space for the first time. They repaired the Intelsat-6 satellite from the U.S. shuttle Endeavour in a walk lasting eight hours 29 minutes.

1996 - Over 600 people were killed by a tornado in the northern Bangladesh district of Tangail.

1999 - Gene Sarazen, one of only four players to win each of golf's four major professional tournaments, died aged 97.

2002 - U S President George W Bush announced an agreement with Russia on a treaty to sharply cut the two countries' nuclear arsenals to 1,700-2,200 from current levels of about 6,000 to 7,000.

2003 - India named a new ambassador to Pakistan, in the latest sign of a thaw between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

2004 - Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee resigned after an unexpected loss to the opposition Congress party in a national election.

2005 - Pope Benedict announced that he had decided to put his predecessor Pope John Paul II on the fast track to possible sainthood.
