National leaders shower praise on MK

Chennai, May 11 (UNI) A galaxy of national leaders today showered praise on DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on completing 50 years in the state Assembly.

At a massive public meeting organised here by the ruling DMK to commemorate the occasion, UPA Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi assured the people that all the promises made in the Common Minimum Programme will be fulfilled.

Ms Gandhi's assurance came in the wake of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi appealing to the Centre to fulfil the unfinished work of providing 33 per cent reservation for women, 27 per cent reservation for the OBCs and an amicable solution to the inter-state river water dispute.

She said Mr Karunanidhi's completion of 50 years in the state Assembly 'undefeated' was a unique feet. She observed that Mr Karunanidhi's victories in various elections had come during the turbulant times in the history of Tamil Nadu politics.

''In fact, the Kamaraj rule was largely possible due to the vigilant opposition in the Assembly and parties outside,'' she pointed out.

Ms Gandhi underlined that it was Mr Karunanadhi, who had led the UPA to a spectacular victory in the 2002 general elections.

Mr Karnuandhi was not just a politician but a great writer, poet and short story writer.

Union Agricultral Minister Sarad Pawar hailed Mr Karunanidhi as a true champion of the social justice movement.
