Maya shortens distance between her and 5, Kalidas Marg
Lucknow, May 11 (UNI) The latest trends and results of the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls indicate that Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is on the verge of occupying 5, Kalidas Marg, the official residence of the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister.
The trends and results provided by the EC till 1200 hrs indicate that the BSP won three seats and was on its way to corner 201 seats.
The assembly has a strength of 403 members. But the elections were held to 402 seats only as the election to the Khaga assembly constituency was countermanded following the death of Congress candidate in a road accident. Elections there would be held on May 24.
There were scenes of jubilations in the BSP camp with workers distributing sweets, breaking into a frenzy and dancing to the tunes of 'dhol' and 'nagada'.
After conceding defeat, Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav is scheduled to meet Governor T V Rajeswar to tender his resignation at 1500 hrs today.
UP Congress president Salman Khurshid, meanwhile, remained closeted with the Governor for about an hour in the face of possibility of a BSP government in the state. The Congress is also contemplating extending outside support to the BSP.
Meawnhile, other smaller parties have also expressed their willingness to support the BSP, BSP sources revealed.
BSP supremo Mayawati, who was closely monitoring the results at her residence since this morning, has conveyed to mediapersons that she will speak to them only after the results are officially announced by the Election Commission.
