Kamban festival starts today

Puducherry, May 11 (UNI) Puducherry Lt Governor Mukut Mithi today paid rich compliments to the extraordinary skills of Tamil poet Kamban, the author of the epic 'Kamba Ramayanam'.

Inaugurating the three-day Kamban Vizha (Kamban Festival) here, he said Ramayana had withstood the test of time and emerged as one of the greatest epics. He praised the efforts of the Kamban Kazhagam for holding the function without fail for the past 42 years.

Chief Minister N Rangasamy, who welcomed the gathering, called upon the youths to imbibe the sweetness of Tamil and nurture its greatness.

Presiding over the function, Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court M Karppaga Vinayagam said that the principle of justice had been extolled in the epic. One must be both admirable and adorable and this concept had been highlighted by Kamban through the character of Rama, he added.

Puducherry Speaker R Radhakrishnan released a souvenir at the function.
