Develop leadership quality for business ethics:Ghandy

Jamshedpur, May 11 (UNI) J R D Tata, Chair professor for Business Ehthics, XLRI, Sarosh J Ghandy stressed the need on developing leadership quality for inculcating ethics in business.

Delivering a special address at a workshop on business ethics, organised by Jharkhand Council of CII here today, Mr Ghandy said the business houses should focus on leadership as the ethics is a small but integral part of overall leadership quality.

He said, '' We have a tendency to choose the easier root by overlooking the human relations aspect as they are very complicated and complex. But until and unless we touch this aspect it would be difficult to follow ethics in business.'' Mr Ghandy criticised the conventional way of counselling for business ethics and said it should come from within. He said ''leadership quality is there in us but we have to develop it''.

He also suggested that CII should organise events to improve leadership quality.

In his inaugural address CII Jharkhand Council chairman Sanjiv Paul said that the importance of managing business ethically has been universally accepted. Unethical business practices may be able to bring some short term returns but in the long term it can cause tremendous harm to the business organisations as well as to the society.

Mr Paul said ''We want to spread the concept of ethics to other organisations in Jharkhand than the Tata Group of companies and CII is chalking out plans to organise seminars on business eithics in various parts of the state.'' Presentations on business ethics were also given by Rekha Seal and C Khan Ethics counsellors of Tata Steel and Tata Motors respectively and an open discussion on the subject was followed.

The workshop was attended by a large number of delegates from more than seventeen companies in and around the steel city.
