Mumbai, May 11 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporationm (BMC) claims to have completed 57 per cent of desilting work in the city.

The BMC has completed 57 per cent desilting work and the rest would be completed before the onsent Monsoon, a BMC press statement here today said.

Work on Brimstowad project, that aims at enhancing storm water drain system, is in progress, the statement said, adding that the BMC has established a huge storm water drainage network in the city and the suburbs. The cleaning process is undertaken by the BMC throughout the year but during the monsoons, the work is increased.

The drainage pipes are generally choked by plastic bags, wooden planks, garbages and other things because of which the drainage pipes get blocked, the statement pointed out.

After the July 26 deluge two years back, the BMC has identified the low-lying areas in the city and, in order to prevent water clogging in these areas, the sewerage water department of the BMC will station a special squad that will pump out the water from these spots.

In all, the city has an area of 1,67,198 metres of nullas out of which 34,966 are in the city limits, 63,703 metres are in the western suburbs and 48,945 are in the eastern suburbs.
