Shimla, May 11 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Irrigation and Public Health Minister Kaul Singh Thakur today blamed the previous BJP government of failing to augment the water supply schemes of the town and initiate any steps for its beautification.

''The BJP has to be blamed for failing to augment the existing water supply schemes in the state capital during its five years tenure besides initiating no steps for its beautification,'' he said at a press conference here.

Mr Thakur said the Congress would inaugurate the Rs 66 crore Giri Ganga Water Supply scheme, which would add 20 million litre water to the existing 70.66 lakh gallon water available with the Shimla Municipal Corporation, on October two this year.

The scheme would not only be sufficient to meet the drinking water needs of the town for the next 20 years, but would also help in increasing the water supply to the people of the town, he said.

He said Shimla Municipal Corporation was only able to provide 70.66 lakh gallon water as against a demand of 98.51 lakh gallon.

Another water scheme estimated to cost Rs 680 crore would be implemented by the state government under the JLNURM and would help in solving the drinking water needs of the people of the town, he added.
