Youth chained to prevent marriage

Basirhat, May 10 (UNI) A 23-year-old man was allegedly confined and chained in a room by his father to prevent him staying with his wife whom he had married under the Shariat Law at Baduria police station area in North 24 Parganas.

A general diary was recorded with the Baduria police station today. Police, however, were yet to rescue the victim.

Police said the bride's father had said Rahul Amin Mollah had legally married his daughter by registering under the Shariat Law but without the permission of either sets of parents. Though the girl's parents accepted the match, Rahul's father, Saber Amen Mollah, was against the marriage.

The matter was later taken to an arbitration meeting at the village level that declared the marriage as void.

Undaunted, Rahul and his wife then obtained a marriage certificate from the Sub-divisional Officer and appeared at the Basirhat court to prove that they had tied the knot and could not be separated.

But Saber Amen did not relent and allegedly confined his son since April 12.
