TRAI for removing glitches in Internet services

New Delhi, May 10 (UNI) In a move that will remove glitches in the present Internet Service regime and permit among other things net telephony calls using personal computers, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today sent its recommendation to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

This would enable the DoT to finalise its position on ISP licensing regime which has been under review for some time.

The TRAI recommendations has also permitted use of any device/ technology/ methodology to provide access to Internet.

Other initiatives that Regulator has sent to the Department for consideration include restrictive provision regarding usage of PC to make Internet telephony calls.

All content available without any access restriction on Internet and include web hosting, web collocation have been permitted. This does not include service providers' configured closed user group services.

All Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have peen permitted to provide Internet telephony without any additional license.

The restrictions presently imposed for provision of the Internet telephony have been removed. Now any device or adopter conforming to the Standards of International Agencies can be used to make Internet telephony calls within India as well as abroad.

TRAI has also sought ISPs permission to have connectivity with Public Switched telephone Network, PSTN and Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN).

Provision of Unified Messaging Service (UMS) has been permitted to ISP licensees without any additional Performance Bank Guarantee (PBG).
