Pope arrives in Brazil seeking to win back Catholics
SAO PAULO, May 9 (Reuters) Pope Benedict today arrived in Brazil on his first visit to Latin America, home to nearly half the world's Roman Catholics.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was at Sao Paulo airport to meet the Pope at the start of his five-day trip.
More than 1 million people are expected to attend an open air mass on Friday at an airfield in Sao Paulo, where he will canonize the 18th-century Friar Antonio Galvao, Brazil's first native-born saint.
The Pope will also address a conference of bishops from across Latin America and the Caribbean in Aparecida, site of Brazil's biggest shrine, on Sunday.
