Bail bond for 5 jail officials in undertrial attack case

New Delhi, May 10 (UNI) A local court today granted bail bond to five jail officials and asked them to appear on May 14, in connection with a complaint of beating up an undertrial.

A total of ten jail officials had been summoned by the metropolitan magistrate on a complaint by undertrial Chandan Mishra, who alleged that he was beaten up by the officials.

Only five of them including Jail Superintendent H C Seth, Prison wardens S K Matta, Mansingh, P P Bhatia, presented themselves today and were granted bail bonds of Rs ten thousand. They and the other five were asked by the metropolitan magistrate P S Malik to appear in court on May 14.

Chandan, who has been lodged in the Tihar Jail for two years had complained to the court about not receiving food on time. To this allegation, the officials had maintained that food was served to prisoners as per the jail manual. After this episode, the undertrial had again complained to the court that the officials had punished him for approaching the court over the food issue.

The court had asked authorities to conduct his medical examination, after which it was confirmed that he had incurred injuries. The officials were charged with criminal conspiracy and causing hurt under Sections 323 and 506 of the IPC.

The five who did not turn up at the court included Jail Superintendent D S Jaydayal, deputy superintendents Ram Chandra and Meena Nukkad and Prakash Chandra.

The judge also asked DG Prisons to personally supervise the safety and security of the prisoners in Tihar.
