Bihar: Notorious criminal shot dead; police custody

Motihari, May 9: A Notorious criminal, Chotelal Sahni, was shot dead today in a court premises here while being escorted by the police to produce before the Magistrate.

East Champaran district police superintendent Sunil Kumar Jha said the criminal was shot dead by another rival gangster Raju Singh Rathore, also being escorted by the police for magistrate production. The deceased was a terror in north Bihar districts and accused of two dozen of criminal cases.

As both the under trial prisoners disembarked from the prison van and proceeded towards the court under police escort, the killer took out a firearm from his pocket and shot dead his rival from a close range, Mr Jha stated.

Mr Jha said the matter of smuggling of firearm into jail was being investigated.

Earlier this year, a member of Raju Singh's gang Vinod Singh was killed allegedly by Chotelal's gangmen and today's incident was believed to be an act of revenge.
