LG sets free 6 life convicts from Tihar

New Delhi, May 9 (UNI) Lt Governor Tejender Khanna today let off six life convicts from the Tihar Jail here on the recommendation of the Sentence Review Board.

The convicts, aged between 45-60 years, were today released on the orders of the Lt Governor, said Tihar spokesman Sunil Gupta.

''The LG has powers to grant premature relief to life convicts who have served a minimum of 14 years in jail,'' Mr Gupta said.

They were released on the recommendation of the Sentence Review Board, comprising of top officials, he said adding that those released would have to give two sureties of Rs 10,000 each.

Mr Gupta also denied rumours that prisoners were planning to go on hunger strike saying this was against the jail manual and anyone violating it would be dealt accordingly.
