Lankan police recovers hijacked vehicle of Indian mission

Colombo, May 9 (UNI) Sri Lankan police today recovered the hijacked vehicle of the Indian High Commission here in Colombo exactly after a month-long hunt.

According to diplomatic sources, Sri Lankan police headquarters have informed the Indian mission in Colombo about the recovery of the luxury van of the mission from the north-central town Kurunegala. The van was recovered this morning by a special police team, along with two other vehicles.

The Toyota dolphin van of the Indian mission bearing the DPL (diplomatic) number plate was hijacked by unknown gunmen after threatening the driver at gun-point in the very outskirts of Colombo on April 9. The vehicle was on its way from Colombo to the Bandaranaike International Airport to pick up a diplomat returning from India.

The hijackers had released the local driver after assaulting him badly in the early hours of the following day.

It is not immediately known whether any arrests have been made in this connection.
