Inmate attempts suicide in HP
Nahan, May 9 (UNI) Alleging that the jail authorities are not serious about his throat ailment, a jail inmate in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh attempted suicide by cutting his arms by a sharp edged weapon last evening, police sources today said.
Karam Chand, serving life term in the Model Central Jail in the district, attempted suicide by cutting his arms minutes before he was asked to return to his barrack, the sources told UNI here.
They said the inmate was admitted to Nahan Regional Hospital after the wardens noticed injuries on his arms.
The inmate has alleged that the jail authorities were not serious in getting his throat ailment treated despite lodging several complaints with them, they said.
The jail authorities, on the other hand, maintain that he had been treated at a Shimla hospital, where doctors said since the ailment was not serious, he should not be admitted there for treatment.
The inmate was only resorting to such tactics to draw public attention and sympathy, the sources added.
