Communists hold separate Victory Day march in Moscow
Moscow, May 9 (UNI) Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov today led a march of WWII veterans and Communists, on the occasion of 62nd anniversary of Victory over Nazy Germany, in the Russian capital.
About 10,000 people marched along Moscow's main thoroughfare, Tverskaya Street (former Gorky Street), all the way to the State Duma (the lower house of Parliament) building opposite the Kremlin.
A group of youth activists from the Vanguard of Communist Youth (AKM) chanted anti-government slogans outside Parliament building, but no one was detained by police.
Mr Zyuganov addressed the rally on Lubyanka Square, formerly the site of the KGB headquarters.
A military parade dedicated to the occasion was held at the Red Square, where President Vladimir Putin congratulated the people.
Besides the official festivities, most Russians observe the day with visits to the graves of relatives and family dinners as nationwide television stations run interviews with veterans and Soviet-era war movies.
Concerts will be held, among others, at Gorky Park, Poklonnaya Hills, Lubyanskaya Square and various events for war veterans are planned throughout the day.
