Chennaiites reel under heat wave
Chennai, May 9 (UNI) People in the city had no respite from severe heat wave conditions today as the mercury continued to soar above 40 degrees Celsius for the first time this summer.
Besides rise in temperature, frequent tripping of electricity in many parts only added to their woes.
In the state capital, Nungambakkam area recorded a maximum temperature of 42.7 degrees while the sub-urban Meenabakkam registered 41.6 degrees. The minimum temperature has been around 29 degrees.
The rise in temperature is attributed to the period of 'Agni Natchatram' as per the Hindu almanac, which starts early in the month of May and lasts till the end of the month.
According to the meteorological department, there would be no respite from the heat wave conditions for the next two days.
