Puducherry, May 9: The local unit of the CPI(ML) today demanded that the Municipality and Commune Panchayats Act be amended to grant powers to the public to recall the elected representatives, who functioned against the welfare of people.

In a statement here, Party state secretary S Balasubramanian, pointing to the pandemonium in the Municipal Council here, a couple of days ago when councillors ransacked the meeting hall, said the councillors by their act had made a mockery of democracy.

It was shameful to note that the cause for the ruckus was due to the chairperson failing to consult the councillors in floating tenders, he said.

Ridiculing the PMK for its double stance in the issue of the elected local body representatives, he said the PMK had neither voiced for holding of panchayat elections here nor its legislators insisted on for the devolution of powers on the floor of the House.

Having failed to do so, PMK state secretary and parliamentary party leader Prof M Ramadass was now much concerned about the devolution of powers, Mr Balasubramanian said adding the people should identify the designs of such parties.

Demanding that the posts of teachers be filled up on seniority basis, the CPI-ML leader said the party would fight for the cause of the unemployed graduate teachers.
