Consensus needed in self-financing issue : Chennithala

Kochi, May 8 (UNI) Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Ramesh Chennithala today urged the Left Democratic Front Government to arrive at a consensus on admission to self-financing colleges with the managments of these institutions.

Talking to reporters here, Mr Chennithala said the government should take concrete steps to discuss the self-financing colleges' issue with the managements concerned to remove the impediments.

He also urged the government to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the matter.

'' The government through discussions and deliberations with the managements can clear the uncertainity shrouding admissions to the self-financing colleges'', he added.

The government should also put forward an ordinance to ensure education for SC/ST and other backward community candidates in these institutions, he said.

Mr Chenithala was reacting against the backdrop of Supreme Court's decision yesterday to reject the Kerala Government's plea that only the Common Entrance Test held by it was valid for the current academic year and the consortium of private self-financed profesional colleges should not be allowed to conduct any entrance test.

'' Through the apex court's decision the managements had gained more strength at the expense of the government,'' he added.

Meanwhile, he reminded the managments to discharge social justice by providing education to the marginalised sections of the society.

Mr Chenitthala said his party was sticking to the demand to enforce a 50:50 ratio between the government and managments in admissions to self-financing colleges.

The admission suprevisory committee headed by former judge P A Mohammed had lost its powers and credibility, he added.
