BJP names candidate for Ullal bypoll

Bangalore, May 8 (UNI) Chandrashekhar Uchil will be the Bharatiya Janata Party nominee for the June two byelection to Ullal Assembly constituency in Karnataka.

Mr Uchil had lost in the 2004 elections to Congress nominee U T Farid, whose death last month necessitated the bypoll.

BJP state President Sadananda Gouda told UNI that the party would seek the support of its coalition partner Janata Dal(S) asking it to reciprocate the BJP's support to JD(S) candidate in the Chamundeshwari byelection, which was won by Congress leader Siddaramaiah.

Mr Gouda said the Central Election Committee of the party had approved the candidature of Mr Uchil, who stood second in the last elections.

Notification for the byelection was issued today. Nominations would close on May 15 and the last day of withdrawal was May 18.

Electronic voting machines would be deployed in the bypoll.
