Preparations begin for Manipur by-elections

Imphal, May 07 (UNI) Hectic preparartions are on in Manipur for the byelections to the Khangabok and Khundrakpam constituencies on June 2, official sources said today.

The Khangabok seat was vacated by Chief Minister O.Ibobi Singh.

His wife, Landhoni, will contest the elections against Manipur People's Party (MPP) candidate L.Jatra. Mr Ibobi, who won from two constituencies, retained the Thoubal seat.

MPP leaders said L Jatra, who had earlier defeated the chief minister but lost this time, would contest the elections again.

MPP leaders also hinted at the possibility of the opposition parties putting up a joint candidate.

The Congress party has not yet officially announced the list of candidates for the two seats but there was no dispute in the candidature of Ms Landhoni, party leaders said today.

Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency MLA, Th Navakumar of NCP had died following a massive heart attack.

The CEO said the model code of conduct had already come into effect.

The last date of filing of nominations is May 15, scrutiny would take place the next day and last date of withdrawal of nominations is May 18. Counting of votes will be held on June 5. Electronic Voting Machines will be used for the by-polls, official sources said.
