Pak SC stays procedings of judicial council
Islamabad, May 7: Pakistan Supreme Court today stayed proceedings of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), inquiring into presidential reference against suspended top judge Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
A larger bench of the apex court, which met in Islamabad to hear petition of Justice Chaudhry, also accepted government's request for constitution of a full court.
The petition challenged Mr Chaudhry's suspension of March 9 under a presidential reference as well as constitution and competence of the SJC to try the chief justice.
Tariq Mehmud, a lawyer of the chief justice told reporters that proceedings of the SJC, which was to meet for the ninth time on Wednesday, have been stayed till a decision on Mr Chaudhry's petition has been made.
He said the petition has now been referred to the acting Chief Justice Rana Bhagwandas for constitution of a full court.
