Nepali Congress district leaders call party to go for republic line
Kathmandu, May 7 (UNI) District leaders of the Nepali Congress have urged the party leadership to abolish monarchy and go for a republican system.
The leaders asked to abolish monarchy completely which has been the hurdle for democracy and development in Nepal, media reports said.
At the end of the three-day discussion, almost all the 75 district presidents of the party favoured republican form of govt, English language daily the Himalayan Times quoted the leaders as saying.
Only a small section of the district unit chiefs was of the view that monarchy could still be a useful thing if ever the CPN-Maoist embarked on authoritarian politics, it said.
''District unit chiefs and chiefs of sister organisations were vehement in their call for dropping monarchy citing historical factors which demonstrated that monarchy has tended to derail the democratic process despite the NC toeing a centrist line,'' the paper quoted the leaders as saying.
All the major political parties have declared that they would support republic system and abolish monarchy, however, the oldest democratic party, the Nepali Congress has not clearly stated its policy regarding the monarchy.
In the recent days, the party leaders have time and again said that they would not support monarchy in the Himalayan nation.
