Munnar encroachments: Writ petition filed before HC

Kochi, May 7 (UNI) A public interest petition was filed in the Kerala High Court today by the Munnar Restoration Society, seeking directions to the state government to take appropriate steps to remove all illegal constructions on river banks and roads in Munnar.

According to the petitioner, Munnar was known as the 'Kashmir of south India' and was a source of pride for entire Kerala.

The petitoner contended that unprecedented encroachments, tresspassing and construction in violation of the state's laws and regulations had come to its notice recently.

The petitioner urged the court to direct the state to preserve and restore the natural water courses in Munnar by invoking the 'public trust doctrine' The petition will come up for hearing tomorrow.
