Moscow, May 7 (UNI) Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov today slammed the European Union (EU) and NATO countries for conniving to rewrite WWII history turning it into instruments of foreign policy.

Speaking at a wreath-laying ceremony for diplomats who perished in WWII, Mr Lavrov said the memory of the Victory was sacred and that all officials at the Russian Foreign Ministry were responsible for thwarting attempts to scoff at history.

''Attempts to profane history are evolving today into elements and instruments of foreign policy in some countries. Unfortunately, some organisations, such as NATO and the EU, are conniving at such attempts to rewrite history,'' Mr Lavrov said.

''The memory to the victors of WWII, will never fade and attempts to blaspheme and re-write history can only cerate indignation,'' he added, pointing to the importance of Soviet victory in the WWII, known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War.

''No one will forget those who fell on the battlefields of the Great Patriotic War and those killed during reprisals,'' Mr Lavrov noted.

Last week, Russia was angered by the reaction of the US and some EU countries, in an escalating dispute with Estonia over the removal of a Soviet-era WWII memorial from central Tallinn.

Russia's ambassador to the OSCE said grave human rights violations in Estonia resulted from the EU and NATO's ''indifference and tacit consent.'' Estonia also received support from the United States, which said it was Estonian internal affair.
