3 hurt in attack near Congress rally in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 6: A child was among three people wounded when militants fired a rifle grenade on a rally organised by the Youth Congress in south Kashmir's Anantnag district today, sources said.

However, police said militants lobbed a hand grenade toward a security forces' vehicle outside the venue of the rally at Nanil near Mattan in Anantnag district.

They said the grenade missed the intended target and exploded on the roadside causing injuries to three civilians.

Police identified the three wounded as 11-year-old Nighat Hameed, Fazi Begum (50) and Safdar Ali Sheikh. They have been hospitalised.

However, the sources said suspected militants fired the rifle grenade toward the Youth Congress rally at Nanil at around 1500 hrs.

They said three people, including a child, were wounded in the explosion. A Tata Sumo, bearing registration number JK03-0182, was also damaged in the blast, the sources added.
