Four NE airports to get face-lift

Agartala, May 6 (UNI) The Civil Aviation Ministry has sanctioned Rs 58.33 crore for upgradation of four airports in NE during the tenth five-year plan, according to official sources here today.

Referring to a recent communique of the ministry, the sources said Agartala along with Dibrugarh, Silchar and Guwahati airports in Asom would get a major face-lift by the end of this fiscal under the project.

Besides, the ministry had approved the modernisation proposal for another 26 airports of the country and sanctioned Rs 116.89 crore for three airports in the north, Rs 3.9 crore for two in the eastern region, Rs 80.32 crore for 11 in western India and Rs 101.82 crore for eight in the south, officials stated.

According to the plan, all the airports would get new runways, international air terminus and high frequency control towers while existing facilities and passenger services would be upgraded in the airport complexes.

Officials also added the North Eastern Council(NEC) is working to improve the air connectivity in the region and had sent the proposal to the Development o North Easter Region (DoNER) ministry for establishing a sustainable air linkage among the major NE towns.
