6 killed, 16 injured as bus falls into gorge

Ghazipur, May 6 (UNI) At least six people were killed and 16 others seriously injured after the speeding private bus they were travelling in collided head on with an auto-rickshaw and fell into a gorge here today.

SP (Ghazipur) S V Antony Kumar told UNI that the accident took place on the Varanasi-Ghazipur districts border, where the bus, on its way to Varanasi, fell off the Rajwari bridge, while trying to save the oncoming auto-rickshaw.

The bus fell off the bridge and landed on the banks of river Gomti, killing four passengers on the spot.

The grievously injured were referred to the Banaras Hindu University hospital at Varanasi, while the rest were being treated at the Khanpur primary health centre in Ghazipur. Meanwhile, the two people succumbed to their injuries.

Four of the dead have been idetified as Arjun, Mahendra, Sultan Ahmed (all in late forties) and Manish.
