Chandigarh, May 6 (UNI) Continuing its commitment to bridge the digital divide, especially amongst the rural population, 17 e-Gram Sampark Centres will be set up across all the villages of Union Territory of Chandigarh.

The citizens will be able to use all the 17 G2C services and 3 B2C which are presently available to the Sampark Centres situated in the urban areas.

UT Administrator and Punjab Governor Gen (retd) S F Rodrigues will inaugurate the first of the 17 e-Gram-Sampark centre at village Khuda Jassu tomorrow.

These Centres will provide the rural citizens an opportunity to have an access to the huge amount of information, using broadband connectivity. The Centers will emerge as Rural Knowledge Centres for the rural population, especially the disadvantaged.

Information services in these Centres will be provided free of cost, on the lines of Jan Sampark Services. These Centres will emerge as one-stop solutions to the rural population.

This project further targets that the benefits of ICT should reach the masses, especially those who are living in rural areas and without IT connectivity, by providing easy dissemination of Information Services to a citizen and to deliver useful non transactional services.

Information about services of various departments and also regarding private services and other Central Government services will also be available atthese Centres.

As a part of the Mission mode project of the Central government, the local administration has decided to create a State Wide Area Network (SWAN), to be finance by the Central government which will provide hardware for State HQ site and 7 POP (points of preference) sites to be established across the city. Around Rs for crore would be spent by the Central government and the remaining Rs five crore would be spent by Chandigarh Administration.

These Gram Sampark Centres are being networked under SWAN on pilot basis. Thereafter, all e-Governance Centres will be networked under SWAN. The SWAN project is being implemented under partnership with BSNL.
