UP polls: Sonia, Rahul to share stage for first time

Lucknow, May 5: For the first time in the campaigning for the ongoing Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, AICC president Sonia Gandhi will share dais with her MP son Rahul Gandhi in Maharajganj district today.

Maharajganj goes to the polls during the seventh and last phase of assembly elections on May 8.

UP Congress vice-president Satyadev Tripathi told UNI here tonight that the two leaders would share stage at an election meeting in Maharajganj, which borders the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal.

This is for the first time that the two members of the Gandhi-Nehru clan will be seen together on stage for campaigning. It is not yet clear whether the two would together address the proposed meeting.

So far, while Ms Gandhi has addressed one or two meetings a day, Rahul had been holding roadshows and helihopping to various constituencies to address smaller public meetings from the time seven-phased elections were announced..

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh too has pitched in for the Congress candidates by addressing as many as five election meetings, propagating policies of the UPA.
