Agartala, May 5: The Tripura government has initiated a bamboo processing project at a cost of Rs three crore in Khomlung, headquarters of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) to rehabilitate the surrendered militants.

Laying the foundation of the project yesterday, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said the project was aimed at making the surrendered militants financially independent.

The project when made operational would prepare bamboo corrugated sheets, a substitute of metal roof of the houses, he added.

'' The Union Tribal Welfare Ministry has supported the project under the rehabilitation package for the surrendered extremists, '' Mr Sarkar said.

The decision was taken by the state government keeping in view the growing demend of bamboo in the market, Mr Sarkar stated.
