Sonia reminisces Nehru-Gandhi role
Maharajganj/Ballia, May 5 (UNI) Reminiscing the role of the Nehru-Gandhi family, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today said the former were the only to play a vital role in India's development.
''While country's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru gave priority of various development projects, Indira Gandhi raised the slogan of green revolution,'' Ms Gandhi said addressing poll meetings here.
''Even my husband Rajiv Gandhi played a vital role by implementing the panchayati Raj system. Now, being a part of the Nehru-Gandhi family, I have been entrusted with the key responsibility. Therefore, the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre has brought forward several schemes including NREGS,'' she said.
She exhorted the people to take account of development funds from the Uttar Pradesh government.
The AICC chief claimed that the Centre had given funds worth crores for education, roads, health and basic infrastructure to UP.
''However, there is hardly any sign that these funds have been utilised properly and judiciously by the Mulayam Singh Yadav regime,'' she added.
She reiterated that the Congress rule was must for the happiness and prosperity of the state.
Ms Gandhi noted the Manmohan Singh regime at the Centre was working for the betterment and emancipation of every section of the society.
Inveighing the BJP, she said the party not only befooled the masses, but also ruined the country on the issue, which had helped it coast to victory at the Centre in the past.
She observed the non-Congress governments at the Centre and the states, had only pushed the country back in development parameters.
''These parties are only power hungry and interested in filling their personal coffers,'' the Congress chief alleged.
