PM to file nomination for RS seat on May 8

New Delhi, May 5: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to file his nomination papers on May 8 for contesting the May 24 biennial election to the Rajya Sabha from Asom.

The Election Commission has already announced the schedule to fill up two Rajya Sabha seats from Asom that will fall vacant on June 14 following completion of the term by Dr Singh and Mr Indramoni Bora.

According to the schedule, which will be notified on Monday, the last date for filing of nomination is May 14. Scrutiny will take place on May 15, while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 17. The counting of votes will be taken up at 1700 hrs on May 24 immediately after the voting to be held from 0900 hrs to 1600 hrs.

PMO sources said Dr Singh would most probably visit Asom on May 8 to file his papers as a Congress candidate.

Dr Singh has been a Member of the Upper House since 1991, where he was Leader of the Opposition between 1998 and 2004.
