Mercury soars to 42.4 degrees Celsius at Hisar

Chandigarh, May 5 (UNI) The mercury further rose in many parts of north-west India today with Hisar recording 42.4 degrees Celsius, turning out to be the hottest place in Haryana.

Scorching heat prevailed in Haryana and Punjab as the maximum hovered one degree to five degrees Celsius above normal in the region.

People groaned under intense heat at Hisar where the mercury stayed three degrees above normal. The temperature settled at 37.6 degrees Celsius at Karnal and Ambala.

The mercury also kept its upward trend in Punjab. Patiala with 39.6 degrees Celsius turned out to be hottest place in the state, followed by Ludhiana and Amritsar showing 39.2 degrees, two degrees above normal.

The temperature further rose in Chandigarh and its adjoining areas with the city recording 38.0 degrees, one degree above normal, against 36.6 degrees registered yesterday.

Parts of Himachal Pradesh also reported rise in the temperature.

The capital town of Shimla recorded a high of 24.5 degrees, three degrees above normal, while Bhuntar in Kullu district reported 33.6 degrees which was five degrees above normal. Sundernagar in Mandi district recorded 36.2 degrees.

The weather office has predicted light to moderate rains or thundershowers at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh and duststorm or thunderstorm with light rains at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours.
