Man awarded life imprisonment for battering youth to death

Jagadhri, May 5 (UNI) A local court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for battering a youth to death here last year.

Jagadhri District and Sessions judge Virender Singh, in a judgement that came in less than a year of the crime, today also slapped a Rs 5000 fine on the guilty, Vicky, who would have to spend six more months behind bars in case of failure to pay the amount.

According to the prosecution, convict Vicky and his two accomplices had on May 14, 2006 accosted Mahesh here, who had just returned from Nepal, with an intention of looting him.

When Mahesh, who was also with his friends, resisted their attempts, Vicky hit him on head with a thick baton, causing severe head injuries.

People nabbed the trio and rushed Mahesh to hospital who however, succumbed to his injuries.

The court however, acquitted Vicky's companions Madan Lal and Deepak due to lack of evidence.
